LEROY TRAVEL GUIDES

Your First Week in Auckland CBD Without a Car

Settle into a longer Auckland stay with an airport arrival plan, a commute rehearsal and everyday routines from a central city apartment base.

By Leroy Hotels Group · Published 4 November 2026

The first week of a longer stay is easier when you solve a few ordinary journeys before filling your calendar. Start with your arrival, your regular destination and a small grocery trip. Then decide whether a car would help your routine. This guide is for people settling into Auckland CBD for work, study or relocation, rather than trying to see the whole city in a weekend.

Before arrival: plan to the front door

Save your accommodation address, arrival instructions and a contact number somewhere you can read without mobile data. For Bianco off Queen, the address is 2 White Street, Auckland Central. Confirm the arrival arrangements directly with the team, particularly if your flight lands late. An airport arrival time is not an apartment arrival time.

Compare the whole route with your luggage in mind. Auckland Airport lists the AirportLink connection through Puhinui Station and the privately operated SkyDrive service to SkyCity as options. SkyCity is a city drop-off, not Bianco’s entrance: plan the remaining journey separately. See the airport’s official transport information and SkyDrive’s own service details for current stops, operating hours and tickets.

The AirportLink service connects the airport, Puhinui Station and Manukau Bus Station. Auckland Transport warns that rail works can require replacement buses, so check the journey for your actual arrival date. If the connections, luggage or arrival hour make this impractical, compare a direct transfer before travelling. There is no single best option for every arrival.

Day one: keep the radius small

Unpack the essentials, locate the apartment entrance from the street and choose one nearby place for a small grocery shop using a current map. Check opening hours before setting out. Buy for the first meal and breakfast rather than carrying a week’s shopping on an unfamiliar route.

Match groceries to the equipment in the apartment actually offered. Confirm cooking facilities, refrigeration, utensils and laundry arrangements with the property; example photographs do not establish every inclusion. Make a short list of anything you still need to ask, including rubbish disposal and access instructions.

Day two: rehearse the journey you will repeat

Use Auckland Transport’s Journey Planner or the AT Mobile app with the exact destination and the time you need to arrive. Look at the walking sections and transfers as well as the ride itself. A journey that works for a midday appointment may be different from an early start or an evening return.

Where practical, try the route before the first important day. Check the correct entrance to your workplace or campus, the stop for the return journey and what you would do if a service were disrupted. Save a backup route. If you have mobility needs, check step-free access and the actual route with the transport operator and property rather than assuming a central address resolves them.

Choose a payment method deliberately

Auckland Transport accepts contactless cards or smart devices on its scheduled buses, trains and most ferry services. Each traveller needs their own contactless payment method. Tag on and off with the same physical card or the same device: a phone and the bank card linked to it count as different methods. Contactless travel is charged at adult HOP fares, with concessions requiring an eligible AT HOP arrangement.

For an extended stay, compare the current HOP and contactless rules against your own travel pattern. Some ferry services are excluded from contactless acceptance. Read AT’s payment guide before the first trip, especially when travelling with children or seeking a concession. SkyDrive is a separate private service; check its ticket conditions separately.

By the weekend: decide what you actually need

Review the journeys you made, the shopping you carried and any destinations outside the centre. If you are considering a car, confirm parking availability, charges and access with the property before arranging it. If public transport fits your routine, keep the relevant service updates handy and plan occasional longer outings individually.

A useful first-week checklist

  • Save arrival instructions and the property contact number.
  • Check the full airport-to-apartment journey for your arrival date.
  • Try your work or study route, including the return trip.
  • Confirm apartment equipment before a large grocery shop.
  • Check payment rules and any concession eligibility.
  • Review transport and parking needs after trying your routine.

Make Bianco your longer-stay enquiry

Bianco off Queen focuses on long-term accommodation only. Use our Auckland long-term apartment overview to explore the options, or read the separate guide to choosing an apartment for questions about costs, inclusions and terms.

Send your intended start date, expected duration, number of occupants and preferred layout through the Bianco enquiry page or email biancooffqueen@leroyhotels.com. Availability, minimum stays, rates and inclusions are confirmed individually. Website enquiries prepare an email draft for you to review and send; they do not reserve an apartment.
